International Compost Awareness Week
The first week of May is recognized globally as International Compost Awareness Week—a time to reflect on the importance of returning organics to the earth and caring for our soil. Celebrated since 1995, this week marks 30 years of promoting sustainable practices through composting.
The 2025 theme, “Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost,” couldn’t be more timely. It reminds us that the choices we make—whether as individuals, households, or businesses—can help create cleaner and greener communities.
We’re fortunate here in Niagara Region to have curbside compost collection. This program allows residents to divert food waste from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to the creation of nutrient-rich compost. This finished product is used to fortify soil which reduces the reliance on chemical fertilizers. Even better, curbside Green Bin material, is processed into compost and distributed free to residents and donated to schools.
For industrial and commercial settings, the challenge—and opportunity—is even greater. That’s where Davidson Environmental comes in. We work with businesses to collect and manage food waste. Past dated packaged food, oil, coffee grounds and other organic waste is processed and diverted to facilities where anaerobic digestion is utilized. This method captures methane—a potent greenhouse gas—and turns it into biofuel, while also producing compost. It’s a win-win for sustainability and the planet.
No matter who you are—someone tossing scraps into a kitchen bin or a company exploring new ways to decrease your environmental footprint—you have a role to play. International Compost Awareness Week is the perfect time to reflect, learn, and take a step forward.
